Gynecomastia is pathology of mammary glands in women, manifested by a one- or two-sided increase in their size due to hypertrophy of glandular or adipose tissue. It is manifested by densification and enlargement of the breast, feeling of heaviness, painful sensations during palpation. It can regress independently. With the ineffectiveness of conservative therapy, operative treatment is shown, since the long-term existence of gynecomastia represents a risk in the development of a malignant breast tumor.
Mammary glands with gynecomastia can reach from 2 to 10 cm (usually about 4 cm) in diameter. Gynecomastia gives women physical discomfort and psychological difficulties.
Various diseases can be the basis of this disease:
- some experts believe that gynecomastia is associated with an excess of prolactin, the female hormone responsible for producing milk
- other researchers express the opinion that the causes of the problem are an imbalance between the level of androgens and estrogens
- an excess of androgens due to a decrease in estrogen may be a sufficient stimulus for breast growth
- some scientists argue that the decisive influence on the development of the breast has processes occurring in the hypothalamus and the pituitary.
Another risk factor is taking medications containing estrogen or supporting the activity of this hormone, including drugs that inhibit the synthesis of testosterone or reduce its effectiveness (e.g., decongestants, diuretics, antifungal, anticancer drugs). Especially it concerns those people who take pharmacological preparations uncontrolled, at home. It was found that some drugs (heroin, marijuana) could cause symptoms of gynecomastia. Another cause of the ailment is the complication of chronic kidney failure, cirrhosis and liver cancer, impaired hepatic circulation. Malnutrition, a lack of vitamins, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract lead to violations of the whole body, including hormonal problems.
Treatment of false or real gynecomastia depends on the reasons why the women receive this disease. If it is a tumor, you need cancer treatment or taking herbs that fight cancer (hemlock, celandine). In the case of gynecomastia caused by the use of drugs, you must stop taking them or replace them with equivalent medications. If the disease is caused by problems with the liver, kidneys or thyroid, you need to improve the performance of these organs. In women with hypogonadism, it is sometimes necessary to use drugs that suppress estrogen and stimulate the activity of testosterone. At home, patients can make herbal medicines from herbs that contain phytohormones, as well as take anti-estrogenic drugs such as Clomid and other medicines from pharmacies and sports stores.
Women, who are obese, need to reduce the amount of fat in the chest. For this, a low-calorie diet and exercises are used. It turns out that sometimes it is enough to make several changes in your lifestyle and diet to prevent excessive production of estrogen in women and forget about gynecomastia forever.
